Abstract

In this article, the author reflects on the causes of guilt in object relations, examining this phenomenon from a metapsychological perspective. The article presents the author's ideas regarding the origins of various manifestations of guilt, including: narcissistic guilt, guilt in love by reference type of object choice, guilt due to hatred associated with addiction, guilt due to the destructive aspects of love passion, guilt due to falling in love and identification with the object of love, including counter-identification with the oedipal object, the source of envy and competition, guilt due to hatred of separation and acceptance of the otherness of the object.

Jacqueline Schaeffer, psychoanalyst, full-time member of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), titular member of the Paris Psychoanalytic Society (SPP), training analyst of SPP, winner of the Maurice Bouve Psychoanalytic Prize (1987).
