Abstract

The term «second skin» and its concept, formulated by Esther Bick, have existed in psychoanalytic theory since 1968. In the psychoanalytic space the concept of D. Anzier «I-skin», whose term is more commonly used in the psychoanalytic environment, therefore, the term «second skin» requires additional explanations – both the meaning of the term and the concepts associated with it.

The study of the origin of the term «second skin», as well as consideration of the development of interpretations of the term «skin» in the psychoanalytic space, can contribute to a better understanding of the concept of «second skin». It is equally important to clarify the differences of authors in terminology, in views on «skin» in psychoanalysis. Is the «second skin» equivalent or part of the «I-Skin», or is it a separate term, a continuation of skin research in the psychoanalytic field?

Skin – excitation protection layer, container, shell, envelope. Continuing the chain of definitions of «skin», can we add: skin as «psychic stage» and skin as «canvas»? What is the role of tattoos and piercings in psychoanalytic work with patients and how is it connected with the evolution of the concept of «second skin»?

Frequent tattooing on the skin, piercing the skin (piercing) is observed in depressive, melancholic subjects, especially in adolescents. The importance and complexity of working with which is voiced during psychoanalytic conferences.
